短应力线轧机具有刚度大、产品精度高、设备重量轻，操作简单，尤其是“在线快速更换轧机”的特点，使得其成为目前国内棒、线材厂轧钢作业中的主导机型。短应力线轧机大致可分为机架式和框架式两种。如图1所示。(其他只是在平衡方式、轴向调整机构、压下机构、组装方式上等稍有差别，基本结构相同。

轧机受到的轧制力通过轧辊、轧辊轴承、箱体、铜螺母、拉杆等各受力部件的内应力行成一个闭合的环线，即应力线。轧机底座和压下机构不受轧制力，应力线较普通轧机短，提高了轧机强度，减少了轧机的弹性变形，所以称为“短应力线轧机” 。
